Executive Summary

For national logistics and retail distribution hubs like Euro Car Parts, spatial efficiency directly impacts operational profitability. As fleet sizes and staff numbers grow, maximizing the usable footprint of a commercial yard becomes a critical priority. Our client identified that a large, legacy acoustic fence was severely restricting their parking capacity and creating a bottleneck for vehicle movement. They required a commercial groundworks contractor capable of not just taking down a fence, but safely executing a structural dismantling operation in a live commercial environment. Tilsley Groundworks was appointed to handle the complete site enablement package—from the controlled lifting of the heavy acoustic panels to the deep extraction of the supporting steelwork and the final civil engineering required to form a new, heavy-duty traffic entrance.

The tilsley Solution

Working in a live commercial environment means that health and safety, alongside operational continuity, are the primary metrics of success. A Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Director cannot afford for their retail operations to pause because a contractor is blocking the yard.

Because Tilsley Groundworks operates a 100% owned plant fleet, we did not need to rely on third-party lifting contractors or wait for specialist hire equipment to become available. We deployed our Stage V compliant Volvo excavators, fitted with certified lifting check valves, alongside our directly employed CPCS-qualified lifting operatives (Slinger/Signallers).

We developed a rigid Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) to establish strict exclusion zones. Our solution was to break the project into two distinct phases: Phase one focused on the structural demolition and safe material processing, while phase two focused on the groundworks and infrastructure realignment to create the new traffic access points.

Technical Implementation

The technical execution began with the systematic dismantling of the acoustic barrier. These are not standard fence panels; they are heavily engineered structures designed to deflect sound, making them incredibly heavy and unwieldy. Our slinger/signallers securely strapped each individual panel, allowing our 360-excavator operators to lift them out of their channels with millimeter precision, ensuring no damage occurred to the surrounding tarmac or client assets.

Once the panels were cleared, we faced the structural core of the barrier: deep-set Steel RSJs (Rolled Steel Joists) embedded in substantial concrete pad foundations. Using hydraulic breaker attachments, we fractured the concrete footings below the surface level to release the steel columns. All extracted steel was immediately segregated and loaded onto our own haulage vehicles for recycling, minimizing the muck-away and disposal costs for the client.

With the obstruction cleared, the site required immediate re-engineering to handle vehicle loads. To create the new access routes, our civil engineering team saw-cut the existing tarmac to create clean joints. We then excavated the new boundary lines, laid a certified Type 1 MOT sub-base, and installed heavy-duty commercial concrete kerbs (HB2 standard). These kerbs were specifically aligned and haunched in high-strength concrete to withstand the aggressive turning circles and axle loads of delivery vehicles entering and exiting the newly expanded parking zone.

The Results

The transformation of the Euro Car Parts site was immediate and highly functional. By safely removing the obsolete acoustic barrier and extracting the subterranean steel foundations, Tilsley Groundworks unlocked a significant area of previously unusable land.

The newly adjusted kerb lines and sub-base preparation created a seamless, durable access point that drastically improved the flow of traffic in and out of the facility. The project was delivered on schedule, within budget, and—most importantly for a bustling commercial hub—with absolute zero disruption to their daily trading operations. By utilizing our own fleet and keeping waste processing highly organized, we proved once again that Tilsley is the premier partner for commercial site enablement in the West Midlands.
